“In the vast landscape of health challenges, Graves' Disease stands as a formidable opponent.” - Makenna Lewers
Introduction:
This is my story of triumph over Graves' Disease – a journey marked by resilience, alternative remedies, and the discovery of a path less traveled.
I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease approximately 10 years ago. I suffered life-altering symptoms for months before being diagnosed. I recovered within 6 years. I’ve never experienced a relapse, even thru my 2 pregnancies. I recently read that doctors say only 30% of people with Graves’ gain remission. My hope is that this post can be an inspiration to others and bring the percentages up to 100%!
Millions of Americans are affected by Graves’ disease; however, at the time I was diagnosed, I’d never heard of it. I soon found out that my own body was attacking itself. My immune system was wreaking havoc on my thyroid gland resulting in hyperthyroidism. Some may idly think, “What’s so bad with an overactive thyroid? It must be nice to have a fast metabolism.” Well, here are the not so nice symptoms:
The Silent Struggle: Graves' Disease often goes unnoticed by many, but its symptoms are far from subtle. From altered heart rate and brittle hair to cognitive challenges and mood swings, it's a battle that affects every aspect of life. This silent struggle encompasses a range of symptoms, each presenting its own unique challenge.
Risk Factors and Triggers: Understanding the risk factors and triggers for Graves' Disease is crucial. From age and gender to stress and medical treatments, each factor plays a role in the onset of this autoimmune disorder. Awareness becomes a powerful tool in the journey towards healing.
Western Medicine's Limited Treatment: In the realm of Western medicine, treatment options are available, from beta-blockers to radioactive iodine therapy. For some, surgery becomes a necessary step. However, the limitations and potential relapses highlight the need for a personalized approach to healing.
Choosing the Road Less Traveled: Amidst the medical options, I chose an alternative route. Natural remedies, an anti-inflammatory diet, and a reduction in environmental toxins became my weapons of choice. The decision to forgo prescription medications and surgery was a personal one, driven by a belief in the body's innate ability to heal.
A Year of Transformation: With dedication and resilience, my body responded positively to the alternative treatments. Within a year, my symptoms reversed, and I stood on the other side of Graves' Disease – officially "cured." Regular thyroid panels continued to return within the normal range, even during pregnancies, a time when setbacks were anticipated.
Empowering Others through Sharing: This journey has taught me the importance of being attuned to one's body and proactive about personal health. By sharing my story, I aim to inspire others to explore diverse treatment options, whether rooted in Western or Eastern medicine, or a harmonious blend of both. Healing is a unique and individual experience, and there is hope beyond the conventional.
